    DCPA Member in the Spotlight

DCPA Sustaining Member – Janel Stoffels

By 2015 DCPA President, Cheryl Cooper

Many of you already know DCPA sustaining member, Janel Stoffels.  For those of you who don’t, Janel has been a long standing supporter of DCPA as a member, local business owner, court reporter, and friend.

    Personal

Janel was born and raised in Muenster, Texas.  She was one of 10 children.  Janel has lived in Denton since 1972.  She moved to Denton to become a typesetter for the Denton Record-Chronicle and to attend what was known back then as NTSU.  Janel is married to Glen.  She has 2 stepsons and 1 step-grandson.  When time permits, they enjoy traveling.  Janel has a brother, nephew, and 3 cousins who are also court reporters.  It must run in the family.  J

    Professional

In 1976, Janel decided to become a court reporter.  She graduated from Chapman Court Reporting College in Ft. Worth in 1977.  Janel then began working as an official court reporter in Denton, and also worked as a freelance court reporter.  In 1981, Janel moved to San Antonio to become the official court reporter for the 290th District Court.  Interestingly, Janel worked in London, England reporting in the Royal Courts of Justice (including covering depositions) in 1987.  Personally, I’d love to hear Janel’s stories about this unique experience.  In 1988, Janel moved back to this area and opened Stoffels & Associates, Inc.  During her long tenure, Janel has trained and worked with many court reporters.  She has enjoyed the challenges and rewards associated with her work.

    Association with DCPA

Janel has been a member of DCPA since 2008.  She enjoys participating as a sustaining member and sponsor for what she terms “a great association.”

At our last Christmas party in December of 2014, Janel provided gifts for each member:  a glass pickle ornament (with story enclosed).  At our TAPA seminar and conference in April of 2015, Janel provided festive goody bags for each attendee – full of candy and other fun swag.  Janel also agreed to sponsor one of our breaks at TAPA at a cost of $250.00.  She was provided an opportunity, as a sponsor, to speak to our attendees at the conference.  We so appreciate Janel’s generosity and her willingness to go above and beyond as a member of DCPA and a vital contributor and member of our legal community.

    ***

Just think of what we all could do if we got acquainted with each other a little better and were inspired and encouraged to do even better things in our personal and professional lives.  If you know of a member who should be highlighted, please let me know so we can feature them on our website and Facebook page.

The DCPA is excited to host the Texas Alliance of Paralegal Associations ("TAPA") Conference in Denton on April 10-11, 2015!  This conference is an annual event where the top leaders of paralegal associations throughout the state of Texas join together to exchange ideas regarding development of the paralegal profession.

DCPA's theme is "TAPA 2015: Finding Your True North."  The theme is symbolic of Denton County and the North Texas area.  It also represents each paralegal association's orienting point, the force that pulls individuals toward leadership, fulfilling the mission of their association, and helping members find their own internal compass.

Please see the attached registration packet for details regarding this event!

On August 11, 2014, the Denton County Bar Association announced the passing of attorneyTom Jester. As a husband, father, colleague and mentor, he was greatly respected and will be missed tremendously.

There will be a visitation today, Tuesday, August 12th from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Home located at 2025 W. University, Denton, TX. The funeral will take place Wednesday, August 13th at 2:00 p.m. at 1st Baptist Church located at 1100 Malone St., Denton, TX.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Camp Sweeney, a camp specifically for kids with diabetes at P.O. Box 918, Gainesville, Texas 76241 or the American Cancer Society.

Tom has served the Denton community in a number of leadership roles throughout his lifetime. He was elected to the Denton City Council where he held office from 1972 through 1976, spending the last two years on the council as Mayor of Denton. He served on several boards as director, including the Denton Chamber of Commerce board and the Denton Country Club board as well as the boards of several local businesses.

As a respected attorney and businessman he also held the office of Denton Municipal Judge, Denton Corporation Judge, and past President of the Denton Bar Association. Tom was a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and previously served as Chair for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

The law firm of Minor and Jester has been a Denton fixture for decades. At the time of his death Tom practiced law with his daughter, Jill Jester, in the firm.

Our hearts go out Tom's family and everyone at Minor and Jester.
